I was thinking of buying this. :<<Motorola 68030 RC 40 Megahertz Upgrade / Replacement Chip $25.00 Pin Grid Array style chip installs into many boards.>> Question: can I just replace the chip on my motherboard (A3000 stock, for now) or do I need an accelerator card. -- -- "We must be the change we want to see in the world". -- Mahatma Gandhi

Unfortunately, though, I have yet to see an A3000 motherboard that did not have the 030 processor soldered to it. The one I had, and those that friends still have all have the 030/25 soldered to the motherboard. For this reason in particular, you should look more towards an accelerator board. --- Good Luck Alexander W. Another solution, if you know how to handle a soldering iron, is to do some soldering on the motherboard. I'm pretty sure there is a way to double the cpu speed on an A3k. I'm not very sure how to do this, but certainly someone else is. -Kermit

There are hacks on aminet (under tree->board->hack) which have people ALLEDGEDLY done the same kinda thing successfully. I'm not very technically competent - (I plugged my IDE cable in the wrong way and fried my Seagate HD - It's a long story that involves tooting on doobie, going home believing you can change the world, and suddenly finding yourself "tinkering" with your Amiga) - but if you can plug the CPU in, change the "crystal", and do some soldering like that other bloke said, it might just work. Another point is that your Buster chip may have problems. I'm NOT talking about the A4000/Rev9 dilemma, but apparently the common A3000 rev6(or)7 Buster had some kinda problem on the 16mhz A3000 and was stablised to work on only 16/25mhz models. Doing something like the above may close all sorts of wobbly things to happen (becuase your altering the motherboard's processor and not an accelerator card's). Check out the A4000FAQ and look under "The definitive Buster". I remember the last time I quoted something out of a mag about a kid swapping his 7mhz 68000 for a 12mhz 68000 one out of his Genesis/Megadrive and I got pounced on by hundreds of vicious miggy-pros for gross error. Therefore, I'm only suggesting; not telling you the solution. I'd best go before I offend anyone ;) -- Frostycat http://www.jaygee.demon.co.uk

One itty bitty problem... some PCB uses multi-layered circuit board... and
soldering iron can easily distroy the board... one reason that I'm somewhat
reluctant to modify my UWSCSI card... :)
