PPP not disconnecting

Is there anything one can do to make PPP automatically disconnect when
quitting Internet application or when finished to download mail from the
mail server?

At the moment I have got this problem both with OT/PPP and free PPP

Even the version of Claris that is suppose to include this feature.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
