Rev.A iMac (Bondi), O/S 9.2.2, usb keyboard: macally ikey
USB drivers 1.5.6 apple standard install
problem: keyboard intermittently fails to send keypresses, forcing a restart
via mouse to temporarily correct.
after testing all the connections etc., ran apple system profile, scanned
devices and volumes and did a usb report (show usb alerts and events).
lines 32.x reports unable to locate device descriptors; this appears to be
the keyboard isn't reporting its function?
line 1.851 and lines 34.x are also interesting?

if anybody can lend me their qualified attention, and advise me of the
nature of this problem?
I am guessing it *may* be the keyboard itself, but have doubts b/c it is
brand new, and I have had no prob's w/ macally previously.

I am very good at diagnosing computer problems, however, since your
friend doesn't really have a computer, I'm afraid I can't be of much

Another dope who thinks he is smart, amusing or whatever.
In reality - a fool, the only person he impresses is himself.

Gee, seems like somebody has a big chip on his shoulder. Pay far too
much for an inferior outdated unstable and slow computer that can't
run any software? Who are you trying to impress?

Well, *I'm* certainly convinced by your erudite analysis. I now realise
the error of my ways and will be disposing of my pathetic excuse for a
computer as soon as possible.

Yeah, sounds good enough for me too. Out they go: the eMac, the Pismo,
the 8100, the lot. Off goes the iMac 500, just bought for A$275 that has
Panther doing all that internet stuff like a breeze.

I've now seen the light, gunna get rid of these toys and get me some
*real* computers.

Thanks Reverend.

Yeah, you know the little bully who gets the crap kicked out of him and
he runs home to mamma. He tells her lies about us bullying him and
picking on him when we all know it's the other way round.

I'm sure it is, but not for me, that was over and done with over 25
years ago. Although if you were really an adult you would be using an
adult computer. I am sure that when you "come to terms", get a job
and move out into the real world you will have to learn how to use a
real computer, one with a multi-button mouse rather than a one button
extra large playschool mouse.

Touchy! Must be that wintel machine, having to deal with all those
viruses and spayware. See what not getting any sleep does to you?
Having to stay up all night to reinstall winblows just to rid yourself
of the garbage, only to find it back 20 minutes later.

Best get a REAL computer, Turd!

I'm starting to enjoy egging you two sorry excuses on! I'm sure the
rest of the folks are enjoying the show too.

No, my mother is not disappointed in me, She has a child who is very
computer literate. So much so, he knows more that the IT folks at work
who cannot fix a lot of the winblows problems he encounters so he has to
fix them himself. Can you two fully support yourselves on multiple
platforms, or do you only know the one (which sucks big time by the
way). I only use it at work as I have no choice. I come home to use a
REAL computer, not a pc, but a workstation. Can you spell
"workstation"? I doubt it.

Do you know how to use dos, which winblows is still based on, which is
why it sucks so bad? I do! Do you know your way around the winblows
registry?

Or do you just use your winblows machines to play games, which is all
they are good for?

I'm having fun! Shall we continue, idiots (alternate spelling - Trolls)?

I have one, several actually. I suppose you think you are immune to
viruses and spyware? you are more witless than I thought.

Turd, (what a GREAT name by the way! My name is real. My address may
not be but then I don't want or expect e-mail, or spam.), you say you
have several computers. How much did you pay for them? $500, $600,
more? Any get shipped into space in a satellite? Any get used as part
of a super computer? Any so far immune to virus and spyware? (nothing
yet proven to be written to infect Unix or OSX) Any run the best most
stable OS, Unix?

Face it, you're a sucker. Billy boy suckered you. You payed him so he
could feed you garbage software on a garbage OS.

Macs are by no means inferior. One manufacturer makes both hardware and
OS. Know what that means, do you, sucker? It means it works out of the
box! It means it lasts twice as long or longer than your poor choice of
hardware and OS.

Oh, and the next time you fly, you better hope your sorry ass the
winblows server system that air traffic control chose to replace their
rock solid Unix system with doesn't crash, again. Yes, again. Didn't
hear that from Billy did you?

No, he wouldn't tell you poor schmucks. He wants you to continue giving
him money. Seems winblows servers have to get rebooted on a set
schedule, something like every thirty days. Seems the caches fill up
and it slows to a crawl before crashing if left to go. Air traffic
controllers forgot that little piece of info. God I'm glad I don't fly!
Good ol winblows. What a pice of crap it is.

Yes, my main machine is a linux box. I have at least 5 working
computers (1 linux, 1 BeOS, 2 win2K 1XP), not all of them are used all
the time but they all work. Macs make shitty "supercomputers" they are
too expensive and too insecure, and come with very poor support from
Apple who seems to think security through obscurity is a sound
security practise.

http://www.unwantedlinks.com/macsupport.htm

Seems strange somebody would release a spyware remover for macs if no
such thing exists.

At least windows releases timely security updates. But like I say, I
don't normally use windows, I haven't for almost 2 years. Work paid
for win2k on the laptop, the desktop and Xp for the other laptop. I
haven't paid for windows since I bought a machine loaded with win98 6
years ago. How much have you paid for apple OS's <snicker>

If there is one thing worse than closed source software, it's closed
source hardware. Macs are way overpriced, poorly warranteed, and not
easy to upgrade. Is there anything a mac can do that a pc can't? Nope
didn't think so, yet there are so many things PC's can do that macs
can't. Nah, you are the sucker, you paid far too much for a product
that is barely half as useful as it should be and not even close in
either quality or durability as it's competitor which costs half as
much and has plenty of free OS's for it and even more free software.

I know nothing of this, but you don't have to tell me about the evil
empire, I already know, it's been done to death especially by mac
people that have a chip on their shoulders.

I don't use windows servers so this does not concern me. However,
considering that a mac can't even scan slides without locking up, I'd
rather take my chances with windows if I had to.

Heh heh. MS bailed their ass out years ago by agreeing to port MS
office to mac and this is the gratitude they get.

Yeah, it's like once the memory is used up they just give up the
ghost. I have never used a mac that didn't repeatedly crash when given
even the simplest of tasks to perform. Scanning slides, editing
pictures, and we aren't talking complicated layers and stuff, we are
talking about merely cropping and things like that on a large image.
What an exercise in frustration.

I knew it! What a bunch of little twits! All you know how to do is
play games. Can you add 1 plus 1? I doubt it as you waste your lives
playing stupid pointless games.

For your lovely language you lose your Internet provider. They don't
like you. Bye, have a nice life!

I am genuinely surprised to learn that you are over the age of 15.
Please accept my apologies for this slur on your adulthood. However,
given the uninformed nonsense you spout, it was an easy mistake to make.
Your posts seem to imply that you might be frightened of something,
perhaps. You are clearly not happy.

Do you have a mouse detection system built into your Usenet news reader?
If not, I can't imagine how you can tell how many buttons my computer's
mouse has. Maybe you didn't know that Mac users have had the option to
use fully functional multi button mice for at least 10 years. Showing no
particular prejudice I rather like my Microsoft branded optical wheel
mouse for my Mac (3 buttons, 1 wheel). I also own a Windows PC, use
Windows and Mac in the work situation, and own older Apple hardware (I
had an installation of Linux on a PPC9600) as well as my current dual
processor G5. All these are real computers, all have their pros and
cons. My preference 95 percent of the time happens to be for the
Macintosh. What on earth has this preference got to do with you? Why
should you care?

Go on, prove that you are more than a troll - give me a reasoned
argument to support your point of view. Alternatively, keep on with your
current approach and guarantee a place in the kill file, whence peace
will be restored! Smile, and the world may just smile with you!

The porting went both ways I suppose, since both Word and Excel started

Not exactly true...

1. Excel had been started as a DOS product in early '83 as an update to
Muliplan. It was originally called Odyssey. By march '84, however Gates
realized Kapoor had the PC market locked with Lotus 123 and Lotus Jazz.
Therefore, he directed his lead programmer, to dump Excel/DOS and focus
100% on Excel for the forthcoming Mac/512. Most of what ended up in Excel
1.0 for the Macintosh had been written already for DOS.

2. Word 1.0 for the PC was released on 11/15/83 and sold for $475 with a
mouse or $375 without. Word 1.0 for the Macintosh came out in January '85
and was quickly supplanted by word 3.0 for the Mac.

Finally Mac users could print more than nine pages. :)

That's fine mr ostrich, killfile me, that's your prerogative. But I
leave you with just a few of the reason's I don't like macs, and why I
avoid them at all costs.

1) Macs are way over priced and underpowered
2) they are costly to fix
3) both hardware and OS are proprietary which means you must depend on
the notoriously fickle Apple corp for virtually everything from
security patches to processors.
4) lack of viable software, what software is available is very costly
and unstable. Because there is virtually no competition there is no
motivation for software companies to improve their software when users
experience problems. Instead they release an "upgrade" which they
charge you for but is really just a patch for what they did wrong in
the first place. Ever wonder why photoshop is much more stable on
windows than mac?
5) frequent crashes and lockups, perhaps due to shoddy memory
management and/or poor proprietary software
6) poor security: security through obscurity is the worst possible
security model there is. That is Apple's philosophy, says so right on
their web page. It takes them months after publicized security flaws
to fix those flaws. This makes Apple totally unsuitable for a server
platform and just as unsuitable for an "always on" desktop.
7) one button mouse. You say there are multibutton mice but I have
yet to see one attached to an actual mac. Aside from the constant
lockups this is the most annoying "feature" that macs have.

I'd hardly call 64 bit dual G5 processors underpowered. And the iMacs are
not overpriced. Where else can you get a top-quality 20" LCD and 64 bit
computer setup with quality components and stylish design to beat that
price? You could probably build something yourself out of shit parts, but
you get the lack of reliability that comes with it.

Buy an extended warranty and a surge protector. And they rarely break
anyway.

Not much different to MS, except MS takes even longer because of all the
extra hardware it has to support. And has all the bloat that comes with
supporting all the yum-cha crap that is out there.

Haven't had problems with any of the mainstream products that I run on my
G5. I crash maybe once or twice a year, and my uptimes are measured in
months, not hours.

> 5) frequent crashes and lockups, perhaps due to shoddy memory

Maybe in MacOS 9. MacOS X has a full protected memory system.

No ports open to hack by default, and built in firewall, unix security, heck
a virus would have to ask for your password before it can infect you. My
computer is fully open to hackers and viruses and I have never actually had
one succeed in attacking me.

> 7) one button mouse. You say there are multibutton mice but I have

I agree with you that 1 button mice do suck, the first thing I bought with
my G5 was a 3 button Logitech mouse, which worked perfectly without the
Logitech drivers, although I did install them for some extra features. 1
button mice are more simple for the grannies though ;)

For the record I use both mac and PC at home, I have a dual 1.8G5, and a
3Ghz Pentium 4 that I built myself out of the best brands, neither have
crashed since I bought/built them, XP is the best MS OS so far that I have
seen, but it still has a very long way to go compared to MacOS X, especially
in ease of networking. The amount of headaches setting up wireless networks
with XP is ridiculous!
I like the PC hardware almost as much as I like the mac hardware, but the OS
on PCs leaves a lot to be desired. And Linux is not a viable alternative
(yet) for most people despite what many may think.

Anyways that's my $0.02 + GST.

That's the key, build yourself but with *good* parts and put a free OS
on it and you are free from the monopolists.

If I could say something I like about Apple it is that giant LCD
screens they sell, very nice, but still very expensive. I could get a
22" LCD TV for less, but it probably wouldn't be as good. They are
selling them where I work for $2300 US (last time I checked)

>

I have yet to see a mac older than 2 years that isn't either broken or
trashed. Both my regular use PC's are 5 year old PIII's although I do
upgrade them from time to time (more memory updated vid cards etc.).

MS releases updates almost weekly (that can be considered either good
OR bad, but at least the updates are free and reasonably timely). You
can delete the bloat of uneeded drivers etc. but they are handy if you
are like me and contantly add or remove stuff from your boxes.

I must admit I don't have much experience with G5's, my work gave up
on macs a long time ago and there are only a few holdouts . They of
course also have PC's because the macs always break or don't run much
other than word processing apps and spreadsheets.

OSX seems pretty decent, but the mac users I know don't really know
how to use it, and run in compatibility mode or whatever it's called
so they can run the old programs.

Probably because you are in such a minority (in that you are running
a mac) that you just haven't been found. That is security by
obscurity. If you don't have a fully patched system, and that's
provided Apple has bothered to issue a patch, you are vulnerable to a
number of nasty exploits.

No ports open is good, that is one thing I wish windows would do out
of the box, instead you have to close them manually.

Heh, and children :-) At least you have the option for multibuttons so
that is a step in the right direction, how much of the software
supports multibutton?

I'm not a big fan of XP, but it is vey stable, I rebooted my work

I don't honestly remember when that was. I only rebooted because I
wanted to try knoppix.

Ever since around the '80s, PC components have been a commodity. AFAIK,
there are only two manufacturers for LCD monitors. If you buy one from
Apple, Dell, Toshiba, whatever, it comes from the same place. Your chipset
is from one of a few manufacturers, too. PC's - regardless of whether
they're built for Apple, Dell, IBM, or any of the thousands of Chinese
shops here where I live are from the same parts.

The only difference is that Apple has always charged a premium, because
peeps like you and that idiot Chris still get sucked into it.

Its not as if I don't know this from experience - I've bent over for the
great Apple several times. I've had a IIe, SE, LC, and even a Performa.
Unfortunately from System 7 on, the OS was crap.

It was so bad, my mother even switched about three years ago from the Mac
platform and went cold-turkey into Windows 2000. I'm about to switch her
over to Linux.

Yeah, if my machine only did AppleTalk out of a little circle SCSI port, I'd

The only thing that makes Apple OS's nice is that they boot the system from
ROM. Since the propeller-heads at Apple only have to write for a small list
of specifications, they should be able to spend more time making it stable.
I haven't used System 10 yet, but from what I've seen on my father-in-law's
eMac it is basically an Apple-flavored Linux.

Maybe they'll finally do something good with it.

Heh, I'm suprised you get that kind of stability, Rev. I've only seen issues
at work with our Dell machines running XP.

does it matter to you whether someone else chooses to use a Macintosh
computer? Think hard on that.

I could give plenty of examples of disastrous computer experiences of
people who use systems and software other than Macintosh, but it will be
of no interest to you ... and why should it be? You know how to use the
computer you have, and are satisfied with its price and performance ...
excellent. Good luck to you. I am not remotely interested in trying to
persuade you otherwise. I would like you to treat others in the same
way.

Having read other parts of this thread, I see that there is no hope of
that happening, as you appear to get some kind of kick out of trying to
provoke others. Please don't trouble yourself to reply to this post (if
expecting a contribution from me, at least) as I am now taking leave of
this *discussion* and will not be reading, or posting any more to it.

Take it easy,

I really don't care what you use, it makes no difference to me. But if
you followed this thread from the begining, you can plainly see that I
made a one line comment to something posted in the group I frequent (I
really didn't think anyone would have bothered to create a mac group)
and all of a sudden a bunch of mac lusers started attacking me. I have
merely clarified my position. So far there has been nobody able to
refute what I have said, so it satnds. Your friend Chris seems to like
personal attacks, he has issues that, although I find them rather
amusing I don't think I can help him with them as they are not
computer related (or they may be judging from the responses your group
has offered)

That's just peachy. You may want to talk to your friend Chris about
that.

No problem. You won't be missed.

That is my middle name. It's been a slow week.
