Hi All; What can I do with a Performa 850 20MB RAM, 800MB HDD, Ethernet, system 7.5.5? What is the lastest stable system possible. Are any of the upgradable bit-n-pieces easly available in AUS? Thanks for you help.

Hi, 7.6.1 is the last and most stable of all system 7.x.x releases and is recommended for your machine! MacOS8 will run, but s l o w l y ! -- Andrew Summerton <summo@wh.camtech.net.au> Geoff Phillips <1geoff@one.net.au> wrote in article <38554322@pink.one.net.au>... > In article <384f5df8@duster.adelaide.on.net> , goble@kin.on.net > (David. The lack of CD is probably the limiting factor these days as so many programs are on disk. I think 7.6 is the latest that you'll run, but it's a good system and 8 is not a brave new world in relation to 7.6 Frankly, I'd stay with 7.5.5 and Netscape and Explorer 3 The upgrade solution is possible but a B&W G3 is worth going without food for. If memory serves correctly, the Performa uses a chip called 680LC40 or something like that, the LC stands for low cost and the chip didn't have a math co-processor (or something like that) which limits its ability to perform some more ambitious computing functions. Therefore up-grade cards and the like are of dubious worth/value. Basically you have a good little machine, it will do most of the normal business admin jobs with style, clean up the kid's homework, run your family accounts, surf the net, and lever you and yours into the technology age. Kind regards and a very merry Christmas. Geoff Phillips. Gold Coast, Aus.

I'd have to agree there, I've just replaced the conner hd that was installed in my 580CD. System 7.6.1 doesn't use anywhere near us much RAM as 8. A few months ago I would have said go all the way to 8.1 (like mine is now) but after using an 8100 (my first time on a 8000 machine) with 7.6.1, I'd say my work mac is _the_ most stable machine I've ever used ... I might even go back to 7.6.1 on my 580CD and the Quadra950 (ex Workgroup Server 95). ... but OS8 is kinda cool though on a 68k mac. =) Now if I could only get debian m68k lunix to work :-P Rob radiodog@*remove*ihug.com.au -- :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::|radiodog@ihug.com.au|:: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::| icq:40412213|::
