Need recommendation: EIDE controller for Dell 486 Systems

I need to add EIDE controllers to some older Dell 486 ISA/IDE systems. I
need to do this in order to use the larger ( > 1 MB) drives and have
multiple bootable partitions spanning the entire disk.

Can you recommend an ISA EIDE controller that would work well with
this system. We don't need the I/O ports that come with some of
these cards, but it's ok if they're there as long as they can be
disabled.

Also, do you know if anything in config.sys would need to be changed
if we switch to that controller?

In order to disable the onboard IDE controller, is it just a matter
of going into system setup and disabling it?

Thanks for any help.
- Keith

Try one of the co-resident cards. The GSI-18, Promise makes one, and I
recently heard about one from a company called Smart. Some of these will
reside with your existing controller and will replace the disk commands in
BIOS to intercept the interrupts. They are driverless and compatible with
older drives. Any of these cards will operate as either the first or
second IDE controller.
