Can't say why, although I'm sure someone out there will jump contribute. It' s too bad that it took until now for the prices to drop; sure would have been nice to pay these prices when I upped my system memory for Linux. Oh well....

Rudy, I agree with you that the prices posted were too high, but it makes me wonder when the various PC manufacturers are going to drop their prices. It wasn't that long ago that 16MB EDO ran $ 600, and it's down to $ 269 in the San Diego area. One would expect some serious system price drops soon due to cheaper memory prices, not to mention CPU prices continue to drop. rudyr@micron.net (Rudy) wrote: >These are way over-priced. They just ran a 2-day ad for 4 Meg 1x32 60 ns EDO for $65 (albeit, good luck getting one of the likely 10 pieces per store) but the SIMMs contain DRAMs of mixed and sometimes unknown origin and there is either no warranty or a very limited one - maybe 30 days - though they do exchange any defectives. But alongside those they'll sell you a "name-branded" SIMM of the same type (Toshiba, maybe, or Sharp, etc.) for around $99 with a year warranty, a part with a 3 year warranty for maybe $130, and a lifetime warranty part (whatever that means - they'll likely to be thrown away as uselessly obsolete before they wear out) for somewhat more. (All figures approximate; I was really looking for 70ns non-EDO yesterday.) Point is: might be misleading to compare on price alone. Tom Truesdell atrue@garlic.com

I bought both a 166MHz Pentium and 32Mbytes of parity SIMMS from a local shop there, popped them into the MB, and I was a happy camper. Pushed the memory to 60ns from its rated 70ns and was STILL a happy camper. I saved approximately 18% on the memory, not sure what on the CPU. And they were name-brand SIMMS, too, Kingston and PNY. If you check out the NCA website you'll notice that the $58 price for 4 megs of memory is in the "basement" section, where you will find prices seemingly too good to be true. Peruse the rest of on-line store and you'll notice prices more in accord with other mail-order vendors. So, buyer beware. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Doug

This all depends on the type of board you have. Many motherboards now will accept "100Mhz to 166Mhz", chips (as advertised), but it isn't as easy as just popping in the chip. You may have to set the jumper on the motherboard to the correct clock speed. I know that on my Intel Plato Motherboard (Gateway 2000 P5-90), there are 4 jumpers that correspond to 4 different speed CPUs (although Gateway claims that this motherboard won't accept anything higher than 90Mhz). You would need to look at your documentation and see if the motherboard is compatible. Either that or call tech support.

I have a Micron Millenia P-100, I'm not sure what the speed limit on that board is... I know it can go at least to 120Mhz... Anyone out there know if the Millenia (from 1 yr ago) can be jumpered to 166Mhz? I'd love to pop in a 166 in there (and considering the bus speed is the same 66Mhz for both the 100 and 166, that's great!)

Hi Ricardo: I copied this from Micron Forum in CompuServe, quoting a note from Sharky of Micron Tech Support: >>In order to be able to upgrade from the P133 to the P166 you need to have a >> REV B MB. Rev B MB's have an additional jumper on them to set the higher >>clock multiplier (2.5X). We started shipping the Rev B MB's in late October or early November. >>If you have a rev B MB, before you upgrade to the P166 you will have to flash >> the BIOS to the rev 10 BIOS, otherwise the CPU is not recognized by the system. According to this, since your Millennia P100 is about a year old; you do not have the Rev B MB; therefor, P166 is not possible to be installed on you system. I hope this helps. Humphrey H. Chen
