SUN SPARC-2 port setup

I am working with a SUN SPARC-2 system and I am having a
difficult time setting up port ttya to talk to a RS-232 "non-terminal"
device. The link must be full duplex. I am able to establish the
link with the device, but when the device sends return data to the
SUN, the SUN asks for login information. I assume that is because I
am setting the SUN port for terminal IO rather than raw IO. I do not
know how to fix this problem!
This is how I am setting up the port:

First, with super user privlidges, I edit the /etc/ttytab file
and change the ttya initilization as follows:
>>>>>>>>>> ttya "/usr/etc/getty vba.4800" unknown on local secure

Second, I edit the /etc/gettytab file and include a definition
for vba.4800 as follows:
>>>>>>>>>> vba.4800|4800-baud:\
>>>>>>>>>> :p8:ec:sp#4800:
I also disabled the echo but I do not remember 2 digit cmd. (ec?)

Lastly, I reinitialize the system by typing:
>>>>>>>>>> # kill -1 1

At this point the port is set up. The only problem, I believe,
is the getty command sets up the SUN for terminal IO rather than raw
IO. I can send data from the SUN to the RS-232 device all day with no
problem. However, as soon as the device sends data back to the SUN,
the SUN spews out terminal IO such as "login:" and "password:".
I hooked up a HP protocol analyzer to the SUN. I orientated the
SUN as the DCE and the protocol analyzer as the DTE. I set the
analyzer on auto configure, to verify the SUN's ttya port protocol,
and then sent a few packets from the SUN to the analyzer. The
analyzer confirmed to the data as being the correct protocol. At
least I know this is OK. Again, as soon as I had the analyzer send
data back to the SUN, the SUN started spewing terminal IO.
In the /etc/ttytab file I tried opening up ttya as,
>>>>>>>>>> ttya none unknown on local secure <<<<<<<<<<
in an attempt to get away from the getty command. Then I tried to use
the stty command as follows to open up and configure the port:
>>>>>>>>>> stty 4800 c8 -parenb raw > /dev/ttya <<<<<<<<<<
This did not work either. The SUN defaults to the generic term IO
protocol of 9600, C7, and odd even parity.
If you have and solutions I would be greatly appreciative. I
know I am missing something really simple. Thank you very much for
reading this mail.
