MEB had introduced the term intRAnet; that term is nowadays used to
refer to a private network, which may or may not be connected to the
intERnet. As such, MEB is correct - an intRAnet may have NNTP server(s),
which - if it's a totally isolated network - will handle private
newsgroups. My employer has an intranet, which carries several
newsgroups which are exclusive to the company, though it also carries a
small subset of those on the outside, where they are deemed to be
relevant to the company. The company intranet also has web servers,
which carry web pages, which are inaccessible to the outside world;
users of the intranet can access the internal intranet web, as well as
the outside web (though that is filtered, which to me seems fair enough,
though can be tedious).

I'm not quite sure what you mean there, since Microsoft is a company
rather than a "place"; however, assuming you mean the server farm owned
and run by Microsoft, then I agree, from all I've heard the MS servers
do carry some newsgroups that the rest of usenet does. (As well as some
internal ones.) I won't here go into how what is on the MS servers is
presented to their users (i. e. web interface or otherwise), because (a)
I'm not one of those users and (b) we've done that to death here.

Well, "the web" - or "the Web" if you prefer - is something that is
transferred over the internet; the same can be said for
usenet/newsnet/newsgroups. There are websites - Google being the
best-known, but not the only one - which provide a web-appearance
interface to newsgroups, via which people may interact with (read, and
post to, newsgroups) usenet. So "the w/Web" and "usenet/newsnet" are
linked in places; they are not exactly the same thing; and they both
travel via the internet. Common usage is tending to blur the terms
"w/Web" and "internet", and I suspect the distinction is now beyond
rescue, despite what we pedants think. (Newsgroups are now - I fear -
such a minority interest that most newer users of the internet don't
know they exist, except perhaps via the web interfaces, and most not
even those.)
