Going slightly lateral to Gavin's problem, does anyone know of a
way of generally sorting out problems with indigestible versions of
vmm32.vxd?
Aiui, this is a composite device driver, tailor-made for the
system it is on, and created during the installation process. (I
assume that it must also be updated when some sorts of changes are
made to the system.) Various friends have reported that they get
boot-time error messages about vmm32.vxd; the texts vary, but in
most if not all cases they hit Rtn and the load completes, resulting
in an apparently normal Win95 system (I don't think anyone has told
me about similar troubles with Win98 - few of my friends run it).
You'd think (or maybe not, being G9x) that since the system has
to manufacture this file in the first place, there should be some
way of nagging it into re-manufacturing it.
Anybody know a method? Or have I got my ideas wrong?
Reverting to Gavin's problem, *if* he means that he re-formatted
the HDD and repeated the install from scratch, rather than use any
underhand method such as restoring or copying previous systems; and
if he is sure he has not got a virus in the HDDs partition-table;
and if the error was apparent the moment he first booted the new
system; then there must be something very screwey with either his
hardware, or his copy of W9x, or he has made a most unfortunate
selection of options when installing. None of which seem very likely,
even knowing the strange notions of G9x.
I think, Gavin, that you had better post more chapter and verse.
Hardware configuration. Versions of Win9x. Options chosen. Way
you went about the installs. Etc. And have you run a DOS scandisk
(or Norton 8 DiskDoctor)? And can the W9x CDs be used to install
correctly-running Windows systems on other computers?
