i'd like to see the internet (providers and customers) to be considered to
be common carriers.

this would allow things like USENET news and un-moderated mailing lists to
also be considered common carriers.

moderated mailing lists would then be considered the responsibility of the
moderator (although some slack should be applied for the possibility of
forgeries).

i think that this will happen, as i think the government will come to realize
that we have no more control over the bits that flow, then the phone companies
have over their lines.

i would like to see the 'net gain a little more responsibility. it is an
international entity. different cultures, different laws.

i doubt that the net will legally become a nation unto itself, so users of
the net should have consideration for other users.

this would apply in many areas, most of which are "religious".

christians should respect muslims, american "democracy" should respect
canadian "democracy". MS-DOS users should respect Mac users.

if i firmly believe the sun is the centre of the universe, i should not
continuously post the fact, to the annoyance, and possible detriment,
of others. (it is possible that the Vatican could request Catholic sites
to stop carrying traffic in those groups 8^)

while it is possible to ask people to have some respect, it is becoming
obvious that there are too many zealots out there.

if it were possible to police them, i would probably support that initiative.

it isn't possible, so the best i can do is ask them to have some common
courtesy, and respect the beliefs of others, even if those beliefs
radically differ from their own.

in the above, i am not trying to quiet debate, i would encourage it. but
that debate should take place in an appropriate group, not a roving street
battle as we currently have.
