Didn't it also have a provision >that any and all refugee claimants were to be allowed entry to the >Fatherland? No. It had a provision that people that are prosecuted because of political crimes get asylum. >And wasn't that provision recently repealed (or whatever >you call it) to placate the right? Well, I won't discuss what placates whom, but it was modified so that the determination of who is politically prosecuted can involve lists of countries where there is no such prosecution at all (previously it had to be refuted case by case in court) and that people that already applied for asylum in another safe country can't apply here again. A lot of people have argued that this considerably weakens the right to asylum. Others argue that it helps only to throw people out who obviously have no right to asylum but entertain administration and courts for years with legal procedures. Pick your choice. If you like to discuss that in more depth, maybe you take this thread to soc.culture.german. >It seems the German constitution is subject to sudden changes, and I >don't think I'd put too much faith in it. Given the fact that it protects me and not you, and that you don't enjoy an equal protection by the Canadian constitution, I wouldn't overestimate this lack of faith.
