Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Can anyone give me a suggestion as to how to record sounds using a microphone in Linux? I've installed several sound recorder rpm's but nothing seems to detect any input. I've used dd with an input of /dev/dsp, and when I cat the file back, I can hear it, but it is extremely faint, I can barely hear it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! --------------FD4DE15456CA58DBEA44FEED--

You need some sort of mixer program, like xmix or xmixer (2 different
programs from 2 different people). There are probably newer more advanced
ones but those are the ones I've used for a few years. They require
X-Windows, they allow you to select inputs (microphone, line) and set the
sensitivity of recording and volume of playback. Oh, and to actually record
I use another old bit of software wavrec, with it's faithful companion
wavplay. I run them under their gui controller, xltwavplay.
