connecting 2 computers with card 3com etherlink III 3C509TP without HUB

The windows autodetect the card but in the network neighborhood we can't see
the other computer only ours.
We have only connected utp cable without hub (it's possible?!).
The protocols are ipx/spx and tcp/ip.
We can't ping in one computer or another the opposite computer.
Any ideas for make this work?

regards,

Alberto Valejo

You can connect two computers without a hub, but the cable needs to flip
the receive and transmit pairs, did you do that?

	1 ---> 3
	2 ---> 6

	3 <--- 1
	6 <--- 2

1 and 2 need to be a wire pair, 3 and 6 need to be a wire pair.

What is you selected primary network logon software (Client for
microsoft?)... uses NetB... others can function with what you've used..
did you insatll the drivers for each card (as you mentioned, it did
autoconnect??) Are the names of the workgroups the same in network
neighbor (under identification)..the computers can be diff. but all else
has to be the same... 3Com's diagnostics should be able to show a
connection... also, double check you card installations... move one
(only work on the one pC until exhausting the changes) to another slot
on the motherboard. Good luck.

Surely, you've figured it out by now, you have to manufacture a
"special" cable for the job. Swapping the transmit and receive pairs.
Pins 1+2 on end A should go to 3+5 on end B. Pins 3+5 on end A should
go to pins 1+2 on end B. You should not reverse the pairs, simply swap
them.

I think you've got it wrong on the pin numbers for UTP cable (10BaseT).
According to Cabletron: http://www.cabletron.com/support/connect/utp-stp.htm
you cross pins 1 with 3, and 2 with 6!!!

   pins
1---------3
2---------6
3---------1
4---------4
5---------5
6---------2
7---------7
8---------8

Also, go to the URL above for the orientation of the pins on the RJ-45
connector.

Did you use an off-the-shelf cable? If 2 computers are hooked to each other
via a cable, you have to cross the connections. This is what your
hub/concentrator/swithc would do.

go to your local wire and cabling company and tell them what you want to
do. The cable is available at most places.

I am only beginning in networking, sio this is only my very humble
opinion.

Even with a cross-over cable, it wont work. The hub is doing two thing:
crossing the signal from pair 1-2 to 3-6 and resend it (loopback)on the
RX pair (i dont remember wich one) so the sending computer "see" its
signal. Using a cross-connected cable will get you a "no external
loopback" error message since the receiving NIC is not doing the
loopback as a hub would(I have tried and have not succeed in Win95). You
should use use a hub (or coax cable, if you can).
