more: now in its third year, seminar 095
is a six credit undergraduate seminar
which continues work started during
the fall term seminar 089, on the topic
of technology start-ups at mit.

sem095 is an mit course which developed
out of regular tuesday night post-
mit entrepreneurs club brainstorming
sessions, which date back to 1988, and
includes in-depth discussions with
an always changing guest list of mit,
and a few harvard, alum who have started
new technology enterprises while students,
or young alum, who have gone on to success,
or not, or are still at it, and who are,
in some instances, still students.

in this spring term seminar the focus is on
fundraising, venture capital, corporate
intrapreneurship and strategic partnering, and
of course networking for all the above, and more.
it includes the use of the net and isdn-based
video-conferencing for collaborative work
with remote team members, and making presentations
to busy investors and advisors not otherwise
available until their attention has been grabbed.

the seminar also reviews the history and continues
to follow the development of mit's `10k student
competition for best new business plan of the year'
which currently offers a $30,000 first prize and
two $10,000 second prizes, plus inestimably valuable
professional-services-in-kind provided by, among
others, mit alum and their legal and venture firms.

come to the first meeting of seminar 095 on
this tuesday and meet other mit students interested
in developing their ideas and talents, and probably
meeting students you'll need and want on your
start-up team, if not while you're yet a student,
perhaps soon after graduation.

also this tuesday meet james deverell '96, e-club member
and seminar 089 alum, who as co-chair of this year's
10k competition organising and planning committee,
will review the planning, operations and current
activities of the committee. during spring term the
seminar will follow james' and the committee's work
to ensure potential seminar participants who are
interested in working on all aspects of competition
organsisation and planning next year have a good
foundation in what it's all about, especially the
networking and fundraising components.

seminar visitors this term include: chon vo dihn (mit)
co-founder of poppa & goose, the smart food coop and
viso corporation; eric mcnulty, former marketing
director for wgbh-learningsmith (eric's now at cybersmith);
lucretia slaughter (mit/sloan) finance director for
bbn's planet enterprise; david morgan (media lab) director of
strategic business for motorolla; pioneer venture capitalist
bill elfers, founder of greylock ventures (and possibly
other of greylock's directors we'll recognise from around
the institute); dr. shai gozani, md, phd, (mit); thad starner
and steve mann (media lab) mit's own premier cyborgs;
ian eslick (ai lab); john carlton-foss (mit);
dr. thomas sciascia, md (bu); ed cyr (the green business
incubator, project at former green rubber building, cambridge);
john preston, who needs no introduction; and others.

occasional dinners and local field trips are on the
agenda, as well as a special end-of-term discussion and
dinner with professor ed roberts (mit/sloan).

again, seminar 095 meets at 7-9pm in 66-148, immediately
following the regular, weekly, tuesday e-club meeting.

if students have specific questions please send me
e-mail or try catching me at home in cambridge on 864-4039
or by v-mail on x3-2000, and of course at the regular
tuesday night meeting of the e-club at 6pm in 66-144.

later,
