I am glad I am not alone ! I am planning on doing exactly this. I am
setting up a public access unix system in Adelaide and because there
is no way I can afford AARNet network affiliate status (I am pushing
it to even afford mail affiliate status, even assuming I can find
someone willing to give me a feed :( ) I thought I would provide my
users with archives on a Pioneer CDROM multichanger. What's more
one can now get archives of almost everything that goes through
Usenet (yes noise and all) for a relatively low cost yearly
subscription (with monthly or fortnightly upgrades of disks !)

Clearly I am going to end up with a big pile of disks but it seems
the most sensible alternative. I hope the Pioneer can stand the
stress of swapping the disks back and forth ! I will let you
know how it goes.

Of course if someone at AARNet thought this was worthwhile enough
to offer me a cheaper Network Affiliate Status rate then all this
could be made available via anonymous ftp and "anonymous" nntp. I
always have been a bit of an optimist !
