---- /info/welcome.ftpuser:
This is the AARNet Archive Server, Melbourne, Australia.
This server is primarily for users within Australia. It consists largely of
shadows of international sites to reduce the load on the Australia<->US
link. Some general information about the 'archie.au' archive is available
from the files in the directory /info.
/info/archie.posting Electronic News article about 'archie.au'.

Please report any bugs, problems, information on additions you'd like
to see, or new releases we may be missing to ftp@archie.au.
Do NOT do a recursive listing from the root of the archive. Get the ls-lRt.Z
file instead. It already has a complete listing of the names, dates and
sizes of all the files in the archive.
There are some extensions to this FTP server such that if the user
specifies a filename (when using a RETRIEVE command) such that:
True Filename Specified Filename Action
------------------ -------------------- ---------------------------------------
<filename>.Z <filename> Decompress file before transmitting
<filename> <filename>.Z Compress <filename> before transmitting
<filename> <filename>.tar Tar <filename> before transmitting
<filename> <filename>.tar.Z Tar and compress <filename> before
transmitting
Note that it is possible to tar and compress an entire directory tree
on the fly with these features. Please keep such use to a minimum
though since it increases system load.
One possible source of problems may be the extended message facility provided
by this ftp server. If you do have problems, please try using a dash (-) as
the first character of your password -- this will turn off the continuation
messages that may be confusing your ftp client. If you have any unusual
problems, please report them via e-mail to ftp@archie.au
