IPC Media Magic CD/Soundcard and NE2000 network clone troubles

Hello,

Please forgive the cross posts, but the question is relevant (I think)to the
listed groups.

Problem:
I have a small network of 4 or 5 computers connected to a Linux PC which
contained an IPC Media Magic CDROM/Soundcard combo (ISP16 soundcard/Sony AT8000
CDROM "dolphin")

Because this hardware is not recognised by Linux* I thought I would move
the hardware to a DOS/Windows PC and make the CD available across the network
via RCP/FTP (I just use it for sources).
(*it turns out SB compatibility is in software only, not hardware)

The machine I moved it to contains an NE2000 clone network card and is driven
by a packet driver and WINPKT.COM for TCP/IP under windows trumpet.

My problem is that I cannot access the CDROM (even unable to eject) when the
packet driver is loaded.

The soundcard works fine, and so does the network however.
Removing the packet driver allows the CDROM to work properly though.

I tried moving the packet drivers around in the autoexec.bat, and even tried
swapping the hardware to a different ISA slot, but this did not work.

Also I tried changing the addresses of the Network packet drivers, but this
failed as well.

Lastly, I tried reconfiguring the (jumperless) Network card via it's
configuration software.
All of the above failed.

As noted, the ISP16 card works fine, under all conditions, the CDROM cannot
work
at all with the packet drivers loaded.

Here are some settings to help some technical whiz to answer my problem!

Network Card:

NE2000 clone "EN2000" brand: jumperless, IO base==300, IRQ3. Passes all
diagnostics and works fine.

TCP/IP packetdriver loaded at 0x60, WINPKT.COM loaded and masking 0x60 as
normal.
All network services under DOS and Windows work fine.

Soundcard/CD:
IPC Media Magic SB "compatible" (ha!) ISP16 wit honboard CD controller.
set to DMA1, Interrupt 5, port 220H
works under all conditions with DOS/Windows and network

Sony AT8000 double speed CDROM with "dolphin" drivers;
set to port 340H

fails when network packet drivers are loaded.

Other peripherals:
Mouse on COM2
Printer on LPT1

All very standard stuff.
I have ensured that no device is sharing interrupts or Base ports with any
other.

Please help!

#Flame mode on:

Damn IPC for telling this hardware was SB compatible. (LIARS!)
I am furious. Don't buy this hardware if you intend running it with Linux
or with a network.

If this will not work, I have wasted my money, based on an 'expert' opinion
from a shop jockey, who knows less about computers than I do.

#Flame off

If no one can solve my problem, I am quite prepared to swap the CD/soundcard
for an older single session IDE or SCSI CDROM with controller, that is
guaranteed to work with Linux.

I don't want Multimedia, I just want to read the source code CDs I have
collected.

This hardware works great on a standalone PC, so it would be a good deal...

Please help!

Rachel
