Compiling for a single platform

Hi everyone,

Im fairly new to java and have only been programming with it fairly
basicaly for a short while.

What i want to know is, can i compile direct to machine code for my mac,
as apposed to byte code and having to live with the VM?

Im not worried about it being cross platform or any such thing. Its just
im wanting to make a few small applications to run on my mac, and i want
to be able to move them around to machines that dont have normal java
stuff installed.

For instance, within Visual Caf i can compile to an mrj application. But
that doesnt help me if i want to put it on my IIci in the other room and
run it, as it has no mrj installed. Nor do i want to install it.

So anyway, am i crazy?

Just really like to make some truely stand alone apps for my mac for once.

Cheers

Daniel

Same here. :) I've heard of programs like TowerJ (http://www.towerj.com)
and a friend has told me about Visual Cafe ... TowerJ seems to compile to
a fully standalone binary for Win32/Linux platforms, but Visual Cafe seems
to require a .dll to go with the .exe. I tried an alpha version of IBM's
High Performance Compiler, but like Visual Cafe it also requires a .DLL to
be installed on the machine (and a large one too).

Has anyone here used TowerJ or other products? How well do they work?

I'm mainly interested in compiling to native x86 for Win32/Linux, other
platforms would be nice too though. :)

TIA,
goo

I went to the tower page and the following excerpt sums it up:
{
 Please note that TowerJ, is a deployment solution for process-intensive
Java server applications and currently does not include graphic support for
AWT or Swing.
}
The native code compilers do enhance the speed and execution of pure java
code.
IBM's was supporting awt the last time I run it, and it is almost as VB when
it comes to deployment of your application.
In my opinion, currently the best deployable language is Delphi then C and
C++ programs.
Whish I stayed to Delphi few years back.
However, when it comes to safe object technology and reusability Java
outperforms all.
These native code compilers are excellent when it comes to rapid application
development.
That is when you know your code works, but you do not have time to optimise
and make it faster.
I haven't tested the latest "High Performance Compiler" but it would be
lovely if it supported also the shwing classes.
Once compiled application startup and perform significantly faster,
drawback, sometimes the code needs to be tweaked, especially AWT related to
make things work the same as under the JVM.
