localx facilities are often used by external devices (such as routers or other linux boxes). I have also noticed that ht://dig reports its messages to local5.info. On my ascend router, there is a config field to say which localx to report its messages on and what host name/ip to use. The router then just sends them to the machine and its up to the receiving linux machine to recieve them and store them in whatever file the localx entry points to. I have not yet configured another linux box to log across the network so cannot comment on how to set this up. With ht://dig, you don't get any choice unless you edit the source code I guess. I think that they were designed for use by machines on the LAN to log to one machine. Hope this helps, I'm no syslog guru, and I'm not sure I've described it too well. Maybe someone else can add to this. Greyman graham@gmcs.com.au Adam Carter wrote in message <369C2CF2.6E707696@tip.csiro.au>... >> local1.* /var/log/router > >How do you setup the localx facilities?
