Not quite true.  You certainly don't need to recompile the RedHat 5.2
kernel for use with ppp, that is already in there (at least if it's not

As for sound, I've always found that the hardest component to get working.
But again you don't need to recompile the standard RedHat 5.2 kernel
but quite possibly you will need to recompile the sound module.

You may also need the isapnp tools, if it's a plug and play ISA card.
Sound sound cards are also not officially supported but there does exist
code for many of these that will get it working if you do a search for it.

So you don't need to recompile the kernel BUT if really is a good idea
when you get the chance.  You can save memory, and optimize the
kernel for your processor and hardware.  Apparently the kernel cannot
be swapped out of memory so the smaller it is the better (obviously
true in general, but even more so for the kernel).
