I installed my machine with Debian by having the base floppies and another
floppy with minicom and lszrz. After I set up the base system and the minicom
terminal I just logged into the other computer and copied the packages I
wanted straight from the cdrom onto the local hard drive using Zmodem.

You must first set up a getty on the remote machine to accept logins over the
serial port which is either /dev/cuaX or /dev/ttySX on Debian. There should be
an example line in your /etc/inittab which you could modify.

It may seem a bit contived but I wanted to install the packages myself, I
prefer doing everything from the command line and I know exactly what's on my
system.

Besides, everyone should have a couple of terminals hanging off their box
anyway, just to show other people what a real system is capable of. ;)
