Great! I'm using 192.168.1.1 for the pentium and 192.168.1.2 for the 486 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0. I'm not sure what the nameserver and gateway fields should read but the RedHat installation seems to fill them in with numbers anyway. I seem to have the two talking via a parallel cable (i.e. they ping fine), but the RedHat installation stops cold on the last step (name your server and your directory). I have put the appropriate IP address in the /etc/exports file... /mnt/cdrom 192.168.1.2 ...but it says "can't mount from this server" or something like that. I'm a bit stuck now! Cheers :) On 11 Jan 1999 11:01:48 GMT, zebee@zip.com.au (Zebee Johnstone) wrote: >In aus.computers.linux on Mon, 11 Jan 1999 10:29:01 GMT >Mikhail Bovineck <Bovineck@heaven.chess.com> wrote: >> >>Well I think the key concept is "appropriate IPs and bingo" which is >>what I am struggling with (I haven't had much experience with >>networking - i.e. no experience). >> >>Could you explain that for me please? > >I can try.... > >OK.. the command you want is ifconfig, that's how interfaces go up and >down and do their thing. > >You want to create a nice new network interface, which is a plip one. > >Pop up a window with man ifconfig in it, and see what the options mean. >Pop up another one on the CDROM machine (which I will call the host) su >as root, then tail -f /var/log/messages so you can see what things are >happening. > >Get a 3rd window up, su as root, follow the bouncing ball... > >1) creating the interface > ifconfig plip up >that was simple wasn't it :) You message logging window should show >something like: > > Jan 11 21:45:15 tasma kernel: plip1: Parallel port at 0x378, > using assigned IRQ 7. > >2) configure the interface. >we'll use those famous "private network addresses" for this job.
