Who can match this for performance?

Just a silly post; no problems. This group needs a bit of lightening
up at times.

I run a few Linux boxes at home, and the latest is a resurested 386.

The beast is a 386-25 with a wopping 4 meg of ram. It also has
two really old (80 & 40 meg) IDE drives, and an NE2000 ethernet card.
It is set up with a single 16 meg swap partition.

I have Linux 2.0.18 on it, along with the latest C and other necessary
stuff.

It was time to compile a new kernel... The first time it crashed
and burned; not enough memory. :-( So I added in a 16 meg swap file
as well.

Again I did the:

# make dep ; make clean ; make zImage

and let it run... and run... and run...

I started it at about 10:30 PM Sunday night. Monday morning when I got
up it was still chugggng along. Not much CPU utilisation, but boy was
it swapping. The disk light just doesn't go out.

When I got home Monday night... guess what? It was still compiling.

Had another look after dinner... still going...

Watched a bit of TV... still going...

Eventually it completed at 1:15 am Tuesday morning.

That's a wopping 26 hours and 45 minutes!

The compile was successful, and I am now using it.

Never again! I'll compile any new kernels on my other machine and do
it in about 15 - 20 minutes.

Can anyone beat that for a long kernel compile?

Brian
