: : If you've got a CD drive that uses the "SBPCD" driver (ie a Panasonic or
: : SoundBlaster CD) compiled in as a module and you haven't set the type up
: : properly, it'll take several minutes searching for the drive type when
: : you try to mount the drive. Shouldn't slow down accesses though...
: : (If anybody has figured out how to pass parameters to a module to stop
: : this happening, I'd love to know about it!)

: Unfortunately I beleive there's no way to change it with a module
: parameter. Instead you have to edit it directly into the kernel source, in
: the file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/sbpcd.h. There are comments explaining
: the necessary changes. I have to enter it here, because I have a #$%$#$
: Funai drive which doesn't support drive select, and the kernel gets rather
: confused when it tries to autodetect it.

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/cdrom/sbpcd says this to say about it:
-----
You can specify interface address and type with the "insmod" command
like:
 # insmod /usr/src/linux/modules/sbpcd.o sbpcd=0x340,0
or
 # insmod /usr/src/linux/modules/sbpcd.o sbpcd=0x230,1
or
 # insmod /usr/src/linux/modules/sbpcd.o sbpcd=0x338,2
where the last number represents the SBPRO setting (no strings allowed
here).
-----

Hope this helps,
