James Peek residing at p3072814@student.anu.edu.au blessed us with:
: I have recently installed Linux on my 486DX-100 but found that my
: Creative 4x CD ROM drive would not be recognised. It is plugged into my
: 16bit PnP sound card and works fine under Windows/DOS. Any help with
: this problem would be much appreciated. Could you please reply by e-amil
: though since my news server tends to be a little unreliable.

Someone else has asked for it to be posted, so I will.

With the SB/Vibra 16 PnP the IDE interface is normally set up to be the
Quarternary controller and the drive on that controller can be either
id 6 (hdg) or id 7 (hdh). To change this you may do a couple of different
things. As an ATAPI drive requires and E-IDE interface you can leave it
on the SB (since you have a 486 DX4 100 I'll assume that all of your
IDE controllers, are E-IDE) and pass the parameter to lilo at boot time,
ie. cdrom=/dev/hdh (or whatever) to determine which id the drive has, at
boot time (DOS) look at the cdrom driver loading, it will tell you which
id the drive is.

Another way to do it is to change the I/O information associated with the
controller on the SB. I did this quite successfully under linux, and it
worked great. I opted for the secondary controller, because my old PC only
had one standard IDE, and linux autodetected this provided the cdrom drive
was set to master.

Then a third option is to put the cdrom on one of the other E-IDE controllers
in the system, and if you have a PCI board with onboard IO this could make
a slight (ie. not really noticable) speed difference. Don't forget to jumper
the drive correctly when you do this. At present this is how my setup looks.

Good Luck with it.

Ben.
