My hostname doesn't exist

At least that's what sendmail reckons. Upon booting, when it
starts sendmail, it coughs up:
My host name (spiral) does not seem to exist!: connection refused
I cannot use dip either. Typing: "/sbin/dip -vt" gives:
spiral: unknown server error

So it seems to me that my hostname is not in one of the config
files it's expecting. But I can't find which one.

Everything worked fine until the weekend when I installed a few
more bits from the Slackware 3.0 cdrom. CNews and tcl/tk to be
precise. However I installed other handy looking things from
the networking disk set and it's possible I re-installed dip, ppp
and other network stuff (not sendmail though).

After this I discovered (at the next reboot) that it had reverted
to the "darkstar" default hostname. /etc/HOSTNAME was emtpy,
/etc/hosts only had the default localhost and was missing my ISPs
IP address etc, and /etc/resolv.conf had lost the nameserver lines.
I restored all this and now it thinks it's spiral again. All seems
ok except for that damn sendmail error and dip not working.

What have I missed??!! I'm all out of ideas.

Dave.
