Hi people, here's an interesting problem, if you have any ideas please e-mail me. Background. In order to give a new sys. admin a chance to have a play without touching the production boxes, I grabbed a spare machine and set up Linux V 1.2.1 from the cdroms I have. All is fine and everything works well. Hardware is as follows... Intel DX-2 66 16Mb RAM UM8810 PAIO M/B ( UMC 88XX chip set ) Seagate ST3660A HDD ( 1057/16/63 native, Linux correctly reports as 528/32/63 ) Trios64 S3 PCI 2MB controller Novell NE2000 network card. The Problem. I attempted to upgrade to a later kernel release, I had 1.2.7 as well as 1.3.0 so I went for 1.2.7 as that was a bit closer to the original. i ran the make config with no problems, ran make dep ; make clean and all is fine. I then ran a make zImage which also ran without errors, so I thought every thing would be fine. I coppied the new image to the root, re-ran lilo ( still no errors ) and did a reboot. ( you can see it comming can't you ? ) Well now the fun begins, the machine boots up, probes for hardware and mounts the drive for checking and promptly panics with the following error.... EXT2-fs: #inodes per group too big: 8200 So what is the go here ? Kernel 1.3 has no effect, but if I re install the 1.2.1 image as the boot image the machine is fine again. Any one got an idea for this one ?
