Usually when you are dialing your ISP they assign you an IP address from
a pool of "spares" that they have.

If you told us more about that you were using to connect to your ISP then we
could help you more.

I am using PPP (Point to Point Protocol) and for my settings I have 0.0.0.0 as
my IP address. I am actually assigned one by my ISP.

After I connect I type ifconfig, and it shows me my internet address as well as
the IP address of the machine I am connected to through the modem.
