shared libraries

I'm having trouble compiling programs which use shared libraries under
Xwindows. I've read all the man pages available and as far as I can work
out, is that if a shared library is available and the -l option is used
during the compiling process the shared library is used.

However for my situations this is not the case, and I end up with
binaries that are very large (ie. > 1M). This is purely because a
statice binary is being created. This is not want I want.

As I have almost all the required X libraries I'd much rather have
dynamically linked binaries.

Any help would be appreciated.

Colin Irwin
