: You seem to imply that setting MANPATH is a bad thing. Why?

As far as I know, because that's what /etc/man.config is for.

: I need to set it to make xman work. Any other way?

I'm using the xman supplied with Red Hat, and that works fine with no
MANPATH set. If your version of xman needs it, then I don't think
you've got any option other than to set it (best place is in
/etc/profile and/or /etc/csh.cshrc).
