Mouse problems in X

Hi,
I've had this problem since I first started with Linux (some
number of months ago), and am posting here in something approximating
desparation.

The Problem: The mouse moves erratically (I can hear the groans
already). Specifically: movement down and to the right of the screen
is normal, but the slightest nudge up and/or to the left results in
the mouse pointer travelling at least half a screen width (it seems
that the smaller the nudge, the larger the jump). Also, if the mouse
hasn't been moved since a mouse-button was pressed, then movement
up/left will result in the mouse pointer jumping and then acting as
if I had pressed the same button again (thus getting two presses for
the price of one - Yay). This behaviour does not occur under DOS
Windows 3.11 - it works fine there.

Things I've tried: I've tried every Protocol for the mouse section
I could find, including "Logitech", "Microsoft", "MouseMan",
"MouseSystems" and a few others. I've done this in combination with
/dev/mouse pointing to both /dev/cua1 and /dev/ttS1 (or whatever
it's called - I got it right at the time...). I started out with a
Logitech mouse, and recently got an ordinary Microsoft mouse, and
there has been no discernable difference in behaviour. There are
some fine-tuning options for Logitech mice that I fiddled around
with, but although they had an effect on the mouse, it didn't
really lead to an improvement. I use fvwm (not the latest version)
'cos it makes having a buggered mouse easier, but it does mean I
end up with a lot of "top" windows...

Setup:
	486DX100, 16MB,
	Trident TGUI9440 video card
	RedHat 3.0.3 (also Slackware first-version-with-ELF)
	Kernel 1.3.20 (also 1.2.something)
	XFree server XF86_SVGA_D/E

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

				Rob.
