|This raises a question. Why does the manufacturers of say Slackware
|put their stuff on the net for free?

Because Linux is free and it's good for sales? I mean, how many people
have the patience to download N x 650 Mbytes of files from an archive?
It soon becomes obvious that buying the CDROM set is the way to go. Ftp
is good however for picking up new packages and errata.

Infomagic makes money selling CDROMs, RedHat makes money selling
support, the CDROM is a spinoff and helps them get new customers.

|Do you know if the live system works in Infomagic? This is
|one of my major concerns.

Never tried it, but it's always feasible to do this yourself:

Mount the CDROM under a mount point like /mnt/cdrom.
Make symbolic links from the directories on the HD to the CDROM like
this:

	/usr/X11R6/bin/xmahjongg -> /mnt/cdrom/.../.../X11R6/bin/xmahjongg

|Would you share some of these interesting things with us? I
|have always been under the impression that the fun with
|Linux is to install and configure the software (OS + apps).

Sure, if you want to learn Unix and how to configure hardware, but it's
more fun to get networking working, dialup your Internet provider, surf
with Netscape, install a fax program, do word processing (e.g. I print
music scores with MusicTeX), develop programs, control hardware, etc.
etc.
