Netscape for me I have found freezes up at the beginning when loading fonts.
I sped up the access time for Netscape by running a font server.
(Linux)

On my SPARC, however, I only have Openwindows and no font server,
so Netscape takes ages to load (even with 36mb of RAM).

Sometimes Netscape, on both Linux and Sun freezes while doing DNS lookups.
My solution to this was to run a small caching named (until I get a real
DNS entry).

I reckon Netscape is just not well optimised.

Me too - more RAM and the suggestions above will make it better.
In the meantime, try turning off the memory and disk caching,
Netscape can grow to an enormous size (like Lucky the Cat)
when the index for the cache grows in memory (I think).

Turning off caching in NS seems to be a quick, but temporary
fix for Macs and PCs anyway, so I guess the same goes for X...

At the very least if you only have 8mb, don't use the memory cache.

Personally, I am amazed at how cheap RAM is getting...
I bought 32MB of Parity RAM for les than $900 and it works great!
