RC (raycarr@werple.net.au) opined:
: Okay, I mustered up the courage to attempt a Linux install and this
: is the outcome.....
:
: I'm running Windoze95 on a 1.08 Gb drive. I've partitioned it and
: allowed 25% for on drive D for Linux.
:
: I'm using a Slackware and have told the instal utility that I my HD
: is IDE (its actually EIDE), UMSDOS and an IDE CD Rom drive.

I'm a bit confused here. If you've set aside a separate partition
for Linux, why are you installing it under UMSDOS?
:
: It creates a boot and root disk. I re boot. The boot disk goes
: through nicely with no parameters input at the "boot:" stage. It
: does indicate one thing that I noticed:
:
: scsi: 0 hosts.
: scsi: detected total.
: (why is it looking for scsi?)
:
: I insert the ramdisk as requested and.....

That is, the \emph{root} disk. This is then loaded into a ramdisk,
which Linux runs during the installation process.

: it freezes after the following 2 lines:
: Call Trace:
: Code: cf 90 90 90 90 90 90 89 e1 51 f7 41 38 00 00 02 00 75 34 53

Well, I don't know why it is doing this, but trying to find out has led
me to discover the nifty utility ptrace, so I owe you one now :)

Another post suggests that lack of RAM may be the problem. I insert the
following from Slackware 3.0 /slackwar/README:

Normally you do not need to decompress these disks -- the kernel
will do that as it loads them. These disks may be written to
1.44MB or 1.2MB floppies. Note that if you plan to mount the
rootdisk instead of loading it into a ramdisk (using the method
outlined in LOWMEM.TXT for machines with only 4MB) then you
must decompress the image with GZIP.EXE before writing it out
	to a floppy.
:
: I am totally lost here.
:
Make sure that you intend a UMSDOS installation - that is, that you
want to install Linux as a private directory on a DOS partition,
not on a native Linux partition. If UMSDOS is what you're after,
check /slackwar/README.UMS. Maybe lack of RAM is the problem, in
which case look at LOWMEM.TXT. If this doesn't help, then hit
your computer a bit and try starting from scratch again :). If
still no luck, post to the group again, saying what version of
Slackware you're using, what boot and root disks, what installation
guide (if any) you're following and how far you get through it,
how much RAM your machine has. Saying something snide about Windows
95 will probably get you prompter attention:).

: If anyone can share any light on this I'll buy you a box of Tim
: Tams.
:
Donate them to a worthy cause instead.

: Cheers, Ray C.

Hooray, William Webber.
