Linux v1.0.9 had no support for ide-cd ROMS, so you will have to move up
to v1.2.13 to use your CD. Also, v1.2.13 will be more intelligent about
things like LBA, and v1.3.x can even handle the "Disk Manager" partition
table mungers that ship with 1GB disks to support broken old DOS.

While I advocate the use of v1.09 on small systems (i.e. less than 4MB
of RAM) the fact that you have a 1GB disk tells me that you don't probably
fall into this category. Hence v1.2.13 would be a better choice.

You don't want to do that -- you want "fdisk /dev/hda" -- i.e. the raw disk
device. The devices that you specify above are partitions themselves. While
it is theoretically possible to put another partition table inside a
partition, it probably isn't too useful (with the exception of logical
partitons hidden inside an extended partition of course).
