I have a Mitsumi FX400 jumpered and cabled as slave to a WD AC31200 HDD on
the primary channel of my CMD640 EIDE controller. It works fine. Well, as
fine as a buggy controller works, at least... :S

Check both your HDD and your CD are jumpered correctly and check that the
HDDs are fully EIDE compliant. Some 'EIDE' drives aren't.

Also, you could try not jumpering the CD at all. I've come across a Goldstar
CD that needed to be set up like this just to boot - gawd knows how it
(won't) run Linux if we tried!

That'll work too - that's how I bootstrapped my installation before I knew
my buggy EIDE controller was the reason I couldn't install sucessfully from
CD-ROM.
