Pity you provided only part of the information requested.

I'm not surprised. gcc 2.6.3 is not an elf compiler.

Upgrade to 2.7.x, and you might be in business. In the meantime, compile
in aout format and you might have a hope. With 1.2.8, that means you
need the *original* 1.2.8 kernel without the elf patches applied.

This might be your problem, but I'm only guessing from your vague
description.

Sort of points to a compile-related problem then, doesn't it? If you
can't compile a "hello world", then you'll have little chance of
successfully completing a kernel compile. Fix that problem first,
and you'll be in business.

If you want to fool with ELF, then upgrade to gcc 2.7.2 (or later, if
you don't upgrade immediately). Also, find linux 1.2.13, which is the
latest in the 1.2.x series. I believe there are patches available
somewhere for that if you want to compile it with gcc 2.7.x.
