The main problem I found was that those that did work ok required antique versions of perl (else they put error messages into the html stream) or they produce xbitmaps or xpixmaps which not all readers support. The one I did find that did what I wanted presented very ugly fonts that made the resulting counter look more like a 20-year old petrol pump guage rather than an integral part of the page on which it was being displayed. I also had difficulty following the source code which was poorly commented and not well written (imho). So I continued to look around in vain for a simple counter with simple fonts in .gif format that could be offered to our customers without having to pre-configure every single page counted before it would be useful. Not finding it, I wrote Yet Another Web Counter. :) You can find it at the URL: http://www.blaze.net.au/pub/counter.tar.gz It runs as a cgi-bin and is attached (easily) to any web page via the usual <img src=..> html tag. By setting the counter to transparent fore and backgrounds, you can even count page accesses 'invisibly'. counter uses the gd 1.2 gif generator library by Tom Boutell, which comes in the above file. It is configured to make as an ELF shared library with the distribution since I thought it worthwhile to use in other web image generator applications (and indeed it has become *very* useful for that purpose). -- David Nugent: davidn@blaze.net.au, davidn@unique.blaze.net.au Unix/Linux/DOS/Win/Os2 Microsystem Technical Support [FOR HIRE!] http://www.blaze.net.au/~davidn
