We'll return to suter@fawlty8.eng.monash.edu.au and All's
discussion of Juke boxes (CD)

su> Anyone have any words of wisdom/practical experience
su> they can share in regards to setting a Linux box
su> up with a CD jukebox.

Sure, I'm setting up a friend's Linux machine here. It's a 486DX4100,
16MB RAM and the CD-ROM is a Mountain (Nakamichi make) CD7, which is a
SCSI CD jukebox which holds 7 CDs. The SCSI interface is an Adaptec
card which uses the aha152x driver.

su> e.g., what drivers exist for what hardware
 su> any performance problems

The hardware I'm using is listed above. FYI, it's SCSI.

su> general info - how does the system appear
su> to the user - for a 7 CD do you
su> have 7 different mount points is
 su> your file system

Yes, if I wanted to use all 7 CDs, there's 7 mount points in the fs.

su> - about how quickly does it move from one
 su> CD to the next

I'd have to time it (which I can do from the DOS machine. Hang on. :-)

Seems to be about 4-5 seconds to change CDs

su> As you may guess, I don't have any experience with any juke boxes
su> under any operating system so almost all information
su> is potentially useful at this stage.
 su> regards

I've got the CD7 to run well here under Linux. Seems to be quite good.
However, some drives like the CD7 need to have the boot parameter
max_scsi_luns=7, since each CD uses a separate lun. Without this
parameter (either in /etc/lilo.conf or at the boot: prompt), you'll only
be able to access CD no 1, regardless of which CD you attempt to access.
According to literature I have, there may be problems when 2 users
attempt to access a CD at the same time, but I haven't investigated this
as yet...

... Is it discrimination if no one will sexually harass you?
