gcc 2.7.x is ELF. Your old 2.6.3 was a.out (almost certainly).

You wont be able to compile any 1.2.x kernel as ELF without applying
patches to them. For 1.2.13, try using this patch:

ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu
/pub/linux/distributions/slackware/source/kernel-source/v1.2/
linuxelf-1.2.13.diff.gz

I'm suprised that 1.3.17 didn't compile. (But did you "make mrproper"
before trying to do "make conf", "make dep" and "make zImage" again?)

As for -Qy, did you try looking in the gcc and/or ln man pages to see
what it means? (I don't know myself, but perhaps it's now a redundant
or obselete switch).

Oh, beware gcc 2.7.2. If I recall, you need a patch for the kernel or
gcc itself (or is it one of the more recent libc's?), but I can't
recall the exact details.

Cheers
Tony
