Wanted: advice on which Linux to buy

I'd appreciate the FAQ for this if someone could send it to me...feel free to
reply otherwise!

I'm thinking of installing Linux in a partition on my HD. I've been running
OS/2 on a primary partition for a few months and decided that I'm not
entirely happy with it. So, I'm going to trash it and start afresh with
Linux.

I have:

Pentium 90
1Gb EIDE HD (divided into partitions - one for booting DOS, one for booting
OS/2)
170Mb IDE HD (I'm going to use this drive for Win 95 - which I want to be
able to dual boot to when I need to use it)
Diamond 2Mb DRAM video card
Goldstar Quad speed CD-ROM

I am interested in Linux because I use UNIX at work extensively (and hence
I'm perfectly comfortable using it) and I'm sick of Windows and OS/2. I'm
reasonably comfortable doing minor low level tasks on a computer (eg. trying
different video drivers etc) but I don't want to spend days trying to get a
basic Linux installation working.

I'm after a stable distribution of Linux, that is neither
"just-for-beginners-and-hence-not-very-configurable" nor
"so-many-install-options-it-will-confuse-the-hell-out-of-you". I want to be
able to install it quickly and easily, and then once I've got a feel for it,
start to make full use of it's power. I suspect I should get the final
release of 1.2.x, which I think was 1.2.11.

I'm a fan of software manuals (the Win95 manual continues to demonstrate
that software companies believe that their products are a breeze to install
and we prefer to read all of our manuals online), so I'm thinking of buying
one of these user guide thingy's with a "free" distribution of Linux. Is
there a particular book people recommend? Price is not a concern here. I've
looked in a couple of Sydney city bookshops and seen some but the best I
could find was Slackware 1.2 which seems too old. Yes?

Lastly, where would I buy it from? I live near Ryde in Sydney, and work in
the city, so any decent business around those two areas will do.

Hmm. That's enough questions for now.

Thanks!
