It's 13 Jan 96 03:04, We'll return to David and All's discussion of Calling all gurus: Problems setting up Linux. HELP!!!! Da> I've got a problem. I tried to install Yggdrasil's Plug and Play Da> Linux on my PC. It didn't install properly the first time, so I deleted Da> all of the files from my second hard drive, hdb1. When I tried Da> installing the first time, I had made two partitions, hdb1 and hdb2. I Da> though that maybe that was the problem, so I used fdisk in dos to Da> repartition the disk into just one partition, hdb1. Although I was only installing it on one disk, I recall similar problems. Since the script asked for the partition which was used for swapping, I figured if I defined a partition for swapping, it just might work. This I did, and sure enough, it worked like a charm. :-) Next time you install it, make sure you create a swap partition when you get to partition the disk. I made double sure, and changed the partition type to 82 (Linux boot) when I partitioned the disk. Da> Then I tried to reinstall. When I got to the boot: prompt, I pushed Da> the <tab> key for a list of places to boot from, and hdb2 was still Da> listed. Needless to say, Linux didn't work correctly again. (It said Da> that I had a read-only file system, and things like install_path didn't Da> work because of missing files.) Da> I then deleted all of the files from hdb1 (my second hard drive) once Da> again. Now, when I boot up, instead of going to windows95, it goes to Da> linux. By pressing tab at the boot: prompt, I can force it to go to Da> hda1 to boot, and get to windows, but I want to clear linux from my Da> machine and try to reinstall it again from a fresh start. Da> I think that whatever part of the linux software that is left on my Da> system is messing up future installs. However, I couldn't find any Da> files relating to it. Da> Does anyone out there know how to make my computer boot to hda1 (my Da> Windows95 drive) by default? The problem here is that you still have LILO (the Linux boot manager) installed in the master boot record. To remove this, you'll need to rebuild the MBR with Windows 95. Under DOS, the appropriate command is FDISK /MBR. Not sure if that applies to Windows 95. Good luck. :-) ... It is not necessary to fall into a well to know its depth. -- | Fidonet: Tony Langdon 3:632/367.2 | Internet: tlang@freeway.DIALix.oz.au
