I had a similar problem about two days ago.. I was trying to make a CatRescue
disk from the 1.01E release. superformat seemed to work OK, but using dd to
put the 1743k disk image onto /dev/fd0H1743 was still writing to disk after
about fifteen minutes, so I just took the disk out - BAD MOVE!
That process turned into a zombie, and from that moment on, every process that
exitting turned into, and stayed as a zombie. If I switched to another VT, I
could log in OK, but is I do, say an 'ls', then a 'ps', the ls is still a
zombie. If I then log out, getty doesn't respawn on that VT :-/
The floppy drive was NOT mounted during this operation. I have supermount
compiled into the kernel (1.2.13 - aout compiled) but I umounted it first.
