I followed various pieces of advice and after RTFM, I decided to
upgrade my kernel from v 1.1.59 to 1.2.11 Ok, so the kernel
compiled without error, and I managed to free up space, with the
   removal of redundant drivers.
Now, I did 'make zlilo', and rebooted, it works fine,

Not sure what your exact prob may be but it's always a good idea to
have your old kernel around to boot on just in case things go wrong.

You might have to regress back thru some kernel images until you find
one that works Ok. My /etc/lilo.conf points to a few different kernels
stored in /boot... just in case.

While booting from the original boot/root pair, I grabbed another 1.2.11
kernel (previously cooked) sitting on a PC, copied it to a 1.44 floppy,
mounted it under /mnt, and cp'd from DOS to the hard drive... but I
had to reboot onto the hard drive before I could run lilo to install
the kernels.
