I've often seen errors like this, and it's usually (on my box) because the program I'm running isn't looking in the right place. Try putting more links to /lib/libc.so.4 in, say, /usr/lib, /usr/local/lib, /usr/X11/lib, /var/lib, or where ever ld is looking.
