1.2.11 kernel crashes with /dev/fd0

Hello,

I followed various pieces of advice and after RTFM, I decided to upgrade my
kernel from v 1.1.59 to 1.2.11
Ok, so the kernel compiled without error, and I managed to free up space,
with the removal of redundant drivers.

Now, I did 'make zlilo', and rebooted, it works fine,

BUT:

Now I am having all kinds of weird problems.
First up, when booting, I see that Multi mode on my HD's are now Disabled.
Why?

WORSE!!!
I went to make a rescue disk, using the Bootkit package from sunsite,
It GPF'd and I had to restart.

Tried it again, same problem. (I always try to repeat an error)

OK, so I tried to do an 'fdformat /dev/fd0'

it got through until the verify - GPF when it reported "sector 0 bad" on 2
different disks.
and all my virtual terminals were hung.

SO, restart and run setup - trying to make a boot disk (at least)
through the Slackware menu.

CRASH!!!
"Virtual Memory exhausted"

in the output of the GPF junk was:

"swap: weirdness"

Regular access to fd0 seems OK, I can mount and unmount.
It was fine before with 1.1.59.
(everything was good with 1.1.59)

Now my flop won't work properly:

I try to do fdformat sometimes and I get:

"Device does not exist"
But then I mount it, then unmount it again and it will format (until the
verify)

HELP!!!!!
My system is:

IBM BL75
kernel 1.2.11 (compiled last night perfectly with GCC 2.5.8)
I told the Config to add in ELF support, but have not used it..

Post 1991 floppy (?)
20MB RAM
2x16MB swap partitions
1 64MB swapfile
1.2G Maxtor HD (linux)
540MB Maxtor (C:\ doswin)

CD31a CDROM (don't go - I know, everyone has this problem)
No sound support (although I have a card installed)
Clone NE2000 ether card on irq15

Could this be a DMA error?
I can't see why it would arise now, after not doing it before

Please someone help me - it all worked fine with 1.1.59 ...

BTW
I am a linux Newbie,
although I have accomplished a lot by reading Running Linux, the HOWTOS
and these linux groups.

Please CC to email as well as this group - news on zeta is topsy at present.

Thanks!

Rachel
