From the Byte Unix Benchmarks on an ASUS SP3G 486/66 with NCR on a Quantum
Empire 1080:

File Read (10 seconds) 96526.0 KBps (10 secs, 6 samples)
File Write (10 seconds) 1897.0 KBps (10 secs, 6 samples)
File Copy (10 seconds) 1144.0 KBps (10 secs, 6 samples)
File Read (30 seconds) 99010.0 KBps (30 secs, 6 samples)
File Write (30 seconds) 1710.0 KBps (30 secs, 6 samples)
File Copy (30 seconds) 957.0 KBps (30 secs, 6 samples)

I think that is very acceptable performance (and I think the guys at Byte
didn't reckon with a 10Mb buffer cache back when they wrote the benchmarks :-))

BTW, the almost 100MB/s is _very_ close to the 133MB theoretical limit on a
PCI board, and that says a lot about the speed of Linux in general and
ext2fs in particular...

The only known problem is that the NCR driver doesn't support detaching
from the SCSI bus (and therefore readying itself for other commands). That
brings you system to a halt when you are for example rewinding a tape (because
the NCR driver refuses to do anything else until it gets a command complete
from the tapedrive), and I think it also hurts performance when you work
with CD-ROM's and/or older, slower drives. But you can solve that with an
old Adaptec, and apart from this (I really hope it will be solved one day),
the driver is rock solid.
