I had the same problem.
As someone else said in an article some days ago, the problem is a 
conflict between dialog and gpm, and the solution proposed was to
stop running gpm. 

I have discovered another solution: try to move the mouse or  click
with one of the mouse buttons and then try again to run setup...
This "solution" works on my computer (Slackware 2.1) and I hope that
this could help someone else :^)
