The Seagate was pinched from an old : 386SX, the Maxtor was (until recently) the only HDD in my 486DX/33. : My problem is this-- I'm unable to boot from the Maxtor, even when it's the : C drive, and configured correctly in the computer's CMOS settings. I can : boot of either a DOS or Linux floppy, and use the drive with no problems. : I had created a small, bootable DOS partition on this drive (format /s C:) : prior to (sucessfully) installing Linux, and was unable to boot from the C : drive. OK. First thing to do, is use the linux fdisk to partition and set up the disk drive. Make all of your partitions with linux, this saves DOS stuffing it all up. You should do this with just the drive you want to boot from in the machine set up as a single drive (see jumper settings later). Once you have set up your three partitions (1 Linux, 1 DOS, 1 Linux Swap (in any order)) You should install linux on the linux drive. Once that is complete and you have set up lilo to boot to linux, reboot the machine and load DOS from your origional boot disks. The DOS setup will look at the drive and see the partition which you have made for it. Once DOS is setup, go back to linux through lilo and edit your lilo.conf to allow booting to either dos or linux, and then run the lilo install to reinstall lilo in the boot sector. You should now be able to boot to either OS from lilo. (if you are unsure on lilo setup, talk to your local linux guru or mail me and I will try to help. I give this info, because this is how I set up a similar config.) Once you have got this far, the next bit is easy. Set up your two drives as master slave. The setting for each drive are below. Maxtor 7213AT - Single drive - JP1 pins 9 & 10 closed Master Drive - pins 9 & 10 closed Slave Drive - pins 9 & 10 open Seagate 1144A Single Drive - JB1 pins 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 open Master Drive pins 3 & 4 closed 5 & 6 open Slave Drive pins 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 closed These settings are not the exact models, but are as close as I could come to the info you gave me. Anyway, if both drives are good and tested, the only problme can now be in the M/S setup. If all else fails try doing a FDISK /MBR from DOS, booting to linux from a boot disk and installing lilo again. Any other problems, email me. James. Can anyone supply : me with the jumper settings for either of these drives? : Thanks in advance, : -- : Mark White <markw@cs.jcu.edu.au> : Department of Computer Science | Phone: (07) 870 9212 : James Cook University | Fax: (07) 371 8485 : P.O.
