I run ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix on my asus 701 4g and it works well.

You have to select force lower graphics from gconf and it runs a little
slow to get things going, but unless you are on psuedoephadrine that
should be ok. some things do not work properly, like the wireless
function key and maybe sound and webcam, but i never use them anyway.

if you do want more functionality, i would definately recommend
easypeasy 1.5 (www.geteasypeasy.com). it works perfectly 'out of the
box' and runs a modded ubuntu 9.04 especially for eeepcs.

the only reason i dont use it is because it thinks the scroll bar on my
wireless mouse is for changing multiple desktops (if anyone knows how to
fix this i'd love to hear from you)
